WRENFIELD MUSEUM — NETHERBOURNE HOARD — No. 287
Penny of Æthelred II, Crux type.
Obv. + ÆÐELRÆD REX ANGLO. Bust left, sceptre before.
Rev. + BRVNSTAN ON WRÆNFLD
Annulet in the second quarter of the cross. Edge chipped at the point corresponding to III o'clock upon the obverse, the chip old and smooth, not new.
Weight 1.42 grammes.
Cleaned by me 11 Feb. 1904, in warm water and with a hog's bristle only, no acid used, the Curator having given leave for the two obscured pennies to be tried. No. 288 would not come clean and is left as it was.
The mint signature is to be remarked upon. I can find no other penny of this reign signed at Wrenfield, nor Brunstan named as a moneyer anywhere I have looked, and Mr Bowyer is of the same opinion. He thinks it should be written up and I have said I would rather it were seen by somebody who knows more than we do. It is a very small coin to make so much of.
