[From Father Jarzembek's sermon files. Written in brown ink on the back of a parish circular form. Main text in Polish; rendered in English translation here, with Polish and Latin phrases preserved in italics.]

Pogrzeb — 22/VII/1922 — tres confratres — Vasko, Rekas, Zieliński [Funeral — 22 July 1922 — three brothers]

I. Opening"In nomine Patris..." — then: "Dzisiaj grzebiemy trzech ludzi pracujących rękami." [Today we bury three men who worked with their hands.]

II. Read: Psalm 140 (141 in some numerations), "Domine, clamavi ad te, exaudi me." [Lord, I have cried unto thee, hear me.] Do not read the later verses tonight; the later verses are for another homily. Tonight read only through the complaint.

III. On the manner of their deaths.

Say this without ornament. Say it in Polish.

"Zginęli od kul, nie od chorób. Zginęli stojąc, nie leżąc. Zginęli w pracowniczych kurtkach, nie w trumniarskim ubraniu. Zginęli w lipcu, kiedy nasza wiara każe nam się cieszyć ze światła, a nie szukać Boga w ciemności. Bóg jest jednak obecny w lipcu również, jak w lutym. Bóg jest obecny na ulicy przed bramą fabryki, jak w świątyni."

[They died by bullets, not by illnesses. They died standing, not lying down. They died in workmen's jackets, not in mourning suits. They died in July, when our faith tells us to rejoice in the light, not to seek God in the darkness. God is present in July as in February. God is present in the street before the factory gate, as in the sanctuary.]

IV. On what the newspapers say.

I will say only this, and only once: The Beacon has printed one explanation. The Clarion has printed another. A pastor is not a newspaperman. I will not tell my people who to believe. I will say: the dead are not outside agitators. The dead are Janusz Vasko, who I baptized Anya nineteen years ago. The dead are Piotr Rekas, whose daughter Magda made her first communion at this altar four years ago. The dead are Franciszek Zieliński, whose wife is confined of their fourth child and is not here today. The dead are men I knew. Nie są one liczby. [They are not numbers.]

V. On justice.

Say this carefully. Do not be incautious. The wives are in the front pews. The employers are not. But some of the employers' stringers will be standing at the back of the nave. Count on it.

"Sprawiedliwość jest sprawą Boga. To nie znaczy, że na ziemi jej nie ma. To znaczy, że na ziemi jej szukamy przez pracę, modlitwę, i czujność. Żadna z tych trzech rzeczy nie może być pominięta. Modlitwa bez pracy jest leniwa. Praca bez modlitwy jest ślepa. Obie bez czujności są bezradne przeciwko tym, którzy — —"

[Justice is the work of God. That does not mean it is absent from the earth. It means that on earth we seek it through work, through prayer, and through watchfulness. None of these three may be omitted. Prayer without work is lazy. Work without prayer is blind. Both without watchfulness are helpless against those who — —]

— cut. Do not finish that sentence in the pulpit. Let them finish it themselves. Go to VI.

VI. For Stefan. (Halina will ask me afterwards what I would have said to Stefan if I had time. I will tell her: I would have said, do not stop seeking justice, and do not stop praying. I would have said: choose the means carefully. A man whose cause is just may still destroy his soul. The souls of our fathers are already at peace; it is our souls we must now guard.)

VII. Closing. "Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine, et lux perpetua luceat eis." [Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them.]

In the Polish: "Wieczny odpoczynek racz im dać, Panie."

Three times. Once for each.

[pencil annotation on the reverse, not Jarzembek's:]

"I found this in Father's sermon drawer when we were sorting his papers after. I am keeping it. — J. Kamiński. Nov. 1923."
