"description": "An orange chromatographic band of identical retention time, identical pH-invariance, and identical absorbance profile in both R. Penn's beet-extract column and H. Galt's carrot-extract column, Walnut College chemistry department, September-October 1957. Penn had been calling it, conservatively, 'Penn's red-orange,' a novel anthocyanin congener of unusual symmetry. Galt's third carrot trial of 4 October 1957 demonstrated, by the column's own arithmetic, that the band was instead a carotenoid common to both root vegetables — and that Penn's thesis chapter on β-elimination products described a contaminant, not a compound."
