STANDING NOTES (Mrs. Doyle, pencil, at foot of page):
"The Chief left the envelope in the strongbox at 22:14 — I locked it after. Mr. B. took back a smaller envelope on his way out. Mr. Rizzo's supper on the house as agreed. Nothing unusual in the evening except Mr. J. Thorpe came to the back for a shorter interval than he has in the past — something has shifted in his standing with Mr. R. and I shall ask Mr. R. about it privately on Monday when he stops for coffee.
The front was busy. Miss Pellman looked tired. Mr. McCausland was alert. Ostermann has a new private client, a Mr. A. — his own age, unmarried, dark. I believe Mr. A. is the private investigator Ainsworth who has been in here once before this autumn; I will ask Henry what he and Ainsworth are working on when he is next in alone. — M.D."
