Lowbridge Junction railway inquiry note, 19 October 1912
District Inspector Bale's minute on M. Orr's amended porter statement, with one small envelope pinned to the corner.
Night statement, taken at 8:22 p.m. on 16 October: Orr said he had passed the time-room door, saw Hargreaves's red mark already entered, and afterward heard the platform bell from the parcels lamp. He added that A. Venn had just put the clock-room key back on the board.
Clean copy sent forward on 17 October: the red mark and Venn's key return are struck out. In their place Orr wrote: I heard the eight bell from the down platform and did not see the telegraph mark. The alteration bears his initials.
Orr's explanation to the inspector: passengers go by the public bell, so the platform wording was plainer. He gave no reason for removing Venn's name.
Envelope marked M. Orr - extra lamp duty, found in his wage drawer, unstamped by the pay clerk. Contents: two half-crowns and a torn brown wrapper from Morrow Watch and Key. Pencil on the flap: platform time only.
Inspector's note: Orr is not to be treated as independent on the time question. He knew the railway mark came first, then revised the account so the later bell could stand without naming the clock-room keyholder.
