[A single sheet of Beacon copy paper, typeset markings throughout. Stamped diagonally in red: "KILLED — BND — 9 May '94." Blue pencil marginalia in at least two hands. From Pellman's locked cabinet, folder labeled "1894 — SOCIETY — Ashmore — killed."]

ASHMORE'S CALENDARPort Hume Beacon — Society Notes — for Friday, 11 May 1894.\ [blue pencil, margin: "not this week" — overwritten: "not any week — BND"]\ [second blue pencil, different hand: "Ashmore: do not file. Vantine has spoken to her. —BND"]

Those of us present at the Ladies' Musical Society dinner of the 4th instant, held at the Garrison Club, had enjoyed an evening of uncommon musical distinction—the program committee is to be congratulated upon the soprano from Buffalo—when an episode at the close of the reception gave us all rather more to remember than the music.

The episode concerned Mr. August Hume, youngest of the Hume brothers, and his elder Mr. Edmund. [blue pencil: "do not name—Ashmore, this is not your business"] Mr. August, who has been understood to be in difficult health, addressed his brother at the reception in terms that carried to several adjoining groups. The substance was a family matter, which this column will not record. [pencil: "good"] It is sufficient to note that Mr. Edmund set down his glass, took Mrs. Hume by the arm, and departed the Garrison Club within approximately four minutes of Mr. August's remarks beginning. Mr. August remained at the reception for some time afterward, in a condition that required the attentions of Mr. Quarrier and ultimately of a cab.

We note, for the calendar of the Society, that Mr. August Hume will not be attending future programs. He departed for a rest in the drier climate of the Southwest on the thirteenth of this month. We have been asked not to print his forwarding address.

[bottom margin, pencil, Ashmore's hand: "I know what he said. The whole room knows what he said. We have a newspaper."]

[different hand beneath: "We also have advertisers and a publisher. —V."]
