Mabel Reed's unsent note
Folded note found between blotter sheets in the apprentice's desk.
Miss Vane,
The right edge of no. 17 is not a lamp flare. It was already there in the wash before the red glass was drawn, and it keeps the same shape when the plate is held against the north window.
If I am to be dismissed for speaking, ask Mr. Pell why he wants the sleeve but not the register, and ask why the safelight drawer has been wiped at the front rail only.
I will not copy the fogged line into the day book unless you put your own initials beside it.
M.R.
Back of note, later pencil:
Never sent. Found under blotter after the certificate was brought in.
