Brown-paper wrapper, Ash lodging house
Wrapper scrap found folded inside the Ash lodging-house rent book.
Outer paper: brown parcel wrapping, blue ribbon fibers under the twine groove, one corner carrying part of a registered label: 418.
Private shelf mark in black pencil:
Ash, upper back room, second shelf.
Rent-book note by Nell Ash:
A parcel-office man brought the packet before supper and asked that it be kept out of the front cupboard. A later visitor said the office paper would settle the route, and no window name should be entered.
A later line is crossed but still legible:
If the round is questioned, I will say only that the wrapper was already here when I took the key.
