Settlement Examination of Bartholomew Warden, Michaelmas 1683
Parish of Holybourne, Hampshire. Before His Majesty’s Justice of the Peace, 14th September 1683. Clerk’s hand throughout; one marginal addition.
The Examination of Bartholomew Warden, labourer, taken upon Oath before me this fourteenth day of September in the five-and-thirtieth year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord King Charles the Second.
This Examinant saith that he is about eight-and-forty years of age and was born, as he believeth, in the parish of Kingsclere in the county of Southampton. That he hath served no apprenticeship and hath gained no settlement by renting or by estate. That he was last in service to one Thomas Freake, maltster, of the parish of Odiham, for the term of fourteen months ending at Lady Day 1680, at which time his said master removed into Berkshire, and this Examinant knoweth not the parish. That he did not follow. That he is not married. That he hath no child or children chargeable to any parish.
This Examinant further saith that he hath been lodging in the parish of Holybourne these nine weeks last past in the barn of one Robert Stiles, with leave, and hath maintained himself by day-labouring, principally in the hop-yards of Mr. Henry Hatch during the picking. That the hop-harvest being now ended he hath not the means to maintain himself further and is like to become chargeable.

Ordered to be removed to the parish of Alton in the said county, being the most recent place of legal settlement this Examination can establish, the said Odiham service having been insufficient in its term to confer settlement there.
