A cabinet of documents from a small American city, 1908–1924. About a hundred items: newspaper clippings, private letters, police reports, ships' logs, household ledgers, a Polish nurse's notebook, a reporter's cabinet of killed stories. Several mysteries braid through it: the wreck of the Iphigenia, the Ohlmann case, the Thorpe matter, and others — built from artifacts, not narration. The default mystery on the latent.
