A small Oxford college, Lent terme 1675. Mr Sparke, bursar; Mr Bourchier, fellow and junior dean for the term; T. Lyster, secretary to the Master. Three leaves in the bursar's hand — battels-roll and the junior dean's book of weekly excesses — and a fourth, a privy day-book the Master will never see. The form asks the question twice on the same leaf. The booke will be honest by absence.
