A small Augustinian house in Norfolk, Lent 1538, on the eve of surrender. Two bookes at cross-purposes: the keeper of the plate's discharge-roll, which names what was received, and the sub-prioress's chapter booke, which names whom is living. The priory's own vellum, at last, rather than the pencil-on-the-wall it has been in the room for a week. Sister-cut, by two centuries' remove, to zoro's S. Aldate's, Lent terme 1675 — the booke spake of the kitchen first.
