5 Nov, 0600. Weighed Port Hume. Clear. SE fresh. Passengers 207, crew 41, cargo per clerk's list. Capt. on bridge.

5 Nov, 1400. Buffalo bound. Steady. Nothing to remark.

6 Nov, 1200. Return run. Cleveland to P.H. direct. Wd. NW 30 kt, freshening. Glass falling fast. Capt. in cabin — not on bridge since [illeg.]. Mr. Osler to me for orders.

6 Nov, 1830. Wd. gale force. Advised Capt. to lay N., run ahead of it to the Can. lee, re-approach P.H. in the morng. Capt. refused.

6 Nov, 2000. Seas abeam. Three taken amidships, boat davits carried away stbd. Capt. on bridge, unsteady on his feet. Called for [illeg. — "another glass"?]. Mr. Osler witness.

7 Nov, 0140. Capt. impaired. Refuses N. heading. God forgive me for not relieving him.

7 Nov, 0420. Boilers laboring. Grounded on reef, position uncertain. Seas over the boat deck. Mr. Osler into no. 2 lifeboat with passengers & one stewardess. No. 1 carried away in lowering.

7 Nov, 0455. List to stbd. abt. 18°. Capt. on bridge, silent. Water reported in engine room. I go below for the ship's papers —

  1. Cpt. gone from bridge. 2d engr. drowned at the stoke-hole. Log & papers to my keeping, God willing —
