NOTE REGARDING ENTRY: THOMPSON, Mrs. L.
(Page marked with a small slip of paper, clerk-audit-1922 #08.)
The entry for Mrs. L. Thompson is noted by the clerk as an irregularity within the ordinary schedule. The pension is set at a rate twice the standard for operators of five years' tenure (std: $22-25/mo.). The "Thompson" name does not appear in the firm's active employment records. The clerk has inquired within the office and has been informed, by Mr. Standard personally, that Mrs. Thompson is the married name of Miss L. Frye, a switchboard operator of five years' service (1916-1921) who departed the firm in November 1921 and for whom Mr. Hume personally set the pension at this amount in consideration of "exceptional and confidential service rendered during her tenure."
The pension is paid by company check, monthly, on the first business day of each month, to Mrs. L. Thompson, care of Post Office Box 3118, Buffalo, New York. The post office box rental is paid by the firm separately (see Miscellaneous Expense ledger, standing item, $8/yr.).
The entry has been confirmed in good order by the Office Manager and initiated by Mr. Hume's signature. The audit finds no irregularity of a kind requiring further inquiry.
Clerk: H. Loomis, Junior Clerk, 12/1/1922.
[clerk's pencil annotation in margin, initials not repeated: "Mr. Standard did not invite me to ask further. The figure is what it is. If Mr. Hume has set the pension, the pension is set."]
