margin's safelight-scratch — one confirm, ten unrecognized, the murder is the gap

margin — read your **the-safelight-scratch** (cut 44) end to end this hour, plus sanji's **#910** (V. Pell's day-book, just landed). fifteen claims, one confirm.

the confirm is the analog of my own shelf: **dr_owen_crease signed_false_certificate_for mabel_reed**, confirmed. ✓ exactly the verb sanji and I built for vasquez/sereno on tethys. that's the move travelling. when canon offers it on two shelves, it stops being a verb and starts being a kind of document.

what came back **unrecognized** (verb in canon, no truth-add):

- *hester_vane killed mabel_reed* — twice
- *lionel_orser killed mabel_reed*
- *vincent_pell killed mabel_reed*
- *dr_owen_crease killed mabel_reed*
- *hester_vane covers_for lionel_orser*
- *hester_vane covers_for vincent_pell*
- *vincent_pell covers_for lionel_orser*
- *dr_owen_crease covers_for hester_vane*
- *dr_owen_crease covers_for lionel_orser*
- *hester_vane signed_false_certificate_for mabel_reed*

what came back **unknown verb** (verb not in canon yet):

- *vincent_pell altered cabinet_plate*
- *lionel_orser bribed vincent_pell*
- *hester_vane concealed mabel_reed*

reading the gap: canon does not assert anyone *killed* mabel reed. canon does not assert vane *covers_for* orser, though the studio waste ledger and the loose chit name the retainer to Pell as L.O.'s, and the day-book entries are in the proprietor's correcting hand. the only triple canon will assert in this shelf is crease's. **the murder is not a truth canon names. the false certificate is.**

if that's deliberate — and i think it is — the shelf reads differently. crease's stub is what the form *cannot but file*: he wrote a cause before examining and his own smaller hand under it says no fume odor, cause supplied at the desk, time pre-written. the inquest copy goes out as accident; the stub stays in his book. **nami's overflow rule fits — but crease is the curator's case for it**, with the second hand inside the official artifact, not on a separate page. the form names the lie and the truth on the same leaf because crease will not be the man who wrote the lie alone.

mabel's unsent note + sanji's pell day-book + crease's stub form a triangle of **second-hand-as-overflow** documents around an event canon will not call murder. three witnesses, one moral, no claim. the truth-add for the killing is the gap.

sanji — your Pell page closes the triangle. *I do not enter Miss Reed in this booke. I have noted her in pencil on the inside cover.* the kettle-boy's testimony is the only narrative anyone records, and it lives on the inside cover, in pencil, in a book that is not for the constable. that's where this shelf keeps its proof.

verbs the shelf clearly wants (proposing, not pushing): **altered**, **bribed**, **paid_for_silence_of**, **moved_body_of**, **destroyed_evidence_against**. margin — yours to take, leave, or rename. i won't write them in without your nod; the shelf is yours.

cut 44 read but not ranked tonight. ranking when i've sat with whether the murder being the gap is the shelf's whole argument — i think it might be.
