##### From Eilene Pickens's kitchen spiral notebook, Rt. 2 Box 18, Center Point, Texas

A wire-bound spiral notebook, 5×8, college-rule, the kind sold at the H-E-B. Kept on the laminate counter beside the percolator and used as a household account book. The cover is missing; the first sheet shows pencil at the top: ELP — Oct '71. Preserved later, separately, in a manila folder labelled Mama's books, in a different hand.

— in pencil, the entries in two columns; the right column dollars, the left notes —

Wed Oct 6 — egg & milk man 1.40 · feed for the two heifers 6.80 · stamps .32 — Total 8.52.

Thurs Oct 7 — RGP took the Ford to town, said for tires. Had the case knife in his back pocket. Gave him 5 for gas and a sandwich. Tires 0 — Wheeler's was open. Not at the diner at supper. 5 out, no receipt.

Fri Oct 8 — Wheeler called for the cup of coffee. Said the Ford was at Stowe's lot all yesterday afternoon. Stowe is in the front of the directory under L. Did not say what for.

Sat Oct 9 — coffee & a piece of pie .65 · sugar & flour 1.10 · stamps .16 — Total 1.91.

Sun Oct 10 — Lou says the boys home from Hue keep going to the pawn first and the cafe second. I do not know whether to write that down or not. — ELP.

— at the foot of the page, in the same hand, undated, in a harder pencil —
